Nail Care During Chemotherapy: How to Manage Brittle Nails, Dryness & Nail Changes in Cancer Treatment

Nail Care During Chemotherapy: How to Manage Brittle Nails, Dryness & Nail Changes in Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy can affect the nails in quite noticeable ways. Many people experience dry, brittle nails during chemotherapy, along with changes like ridges, discolouration, tenderness, or even nails lifting from the nail bed.

These changes are very common and usually temporary, but they can feel uncomfortable and make everyday tasks like buttoning clothes or handling small objects more difficult.

Why do nails change during cancer treatment?

Nail changes during cancer treatment can happen for a few reasons. Some medications can affect nail growth and pigmentation, leading to chemotherapy nail darkening or lines and ridges forming in the nail plate. Fragile blood vessels can also lead to bruising under the nail, and the nail matrix (where the nail grows from) may become more sensitive.

Although these changes can look worrying, they are generally reversible, and nails often begin to recover after treatment ends.

Gentle nail care tips during chemotherapy

Looking after your nails during treatment can really help reduce discomfort and protect fragile skin.

Keep nails short and protected

Keeping nails short and gently filed helps reduce the risk of catching, splitting, or lifting. Avoid cutting cuticles, as this can increase the risk of irritation or infection. Instead, gently push them back if needed.

Protect your hands during daily tasks

Wear gloves when doing household tasks such as washing up, cleaning, or gardening. If you use waterproof gloves, try wearing lightweight cotton gloves underneath. This helps absorb moisture and reduces sweating, keeping the nail area more comfortable and protected.

Avoid nail enhancements

It’s best to avoid gel nails, acrylics, or other nail extensions during cancer treatment. These can weaken already fragile nails and may increase the risk of damage or infection.

Nutrition and hydration for nail health

Good nutrition can support nail strength from the inside out. Staying well hydrated is important, along with ensuring adequate intake of protein, iron, zinc, and biotin, all of which play a role in healthy nail growth.

Using oils for nail nourishment and comfort

Applying nourishing oils or nail balms can help soothe dry, sensitive nails and surrounding skin.

One option is sesame oil for nail care, which is naturally moisturising and has traditionally been used to support dry, compromised skin and brittle nails. It is a well-recognised ingredient in nail and cuticle care formulations.

Our nail balm (Strengh) also includes sesame oil within a wider supportive formulation designed for nails and skin affected by cancer treatment.

Apply a small amount to the nails, cuticles, and surrounding skin 2–3 times daily. Gently massage it in, or use a soft dabbing motion if the area feels tender.

For extra support, wear cotton gloves or socks after application—ideally overnight or for at least an hour while resting. This helps lock in moisture and improve absorption.

A gentle reminder

Nail changes during cancer treatment can be upsetting, but they are usually temporary. Most people find that their nails gradually improve after treatment finishes, although full recovery can take several months.
