The meaning in our Name

The name ‘Brave Crab’ is inspired by a blend of history, science and care. The ancient physician Hippocrates, often regarded as the father of modern medicine, used the term carcinos — Greek for “crab” — to describe cancer, observing the disease’s tenacious, gripping nature. In astrology, Cancer is also represented by the crab – a sign often associated with nurture, warmth and care. The crab itself has long symbolised courage, resilience and quiet strength – qualities that feel very present in the people we hope to support. I’m also drawn to the colour orange. All of our balms carry a soft, natural orange hue from sea buckthorn — a plant rich in nourishing compounds that has become a signature ingredient across the range. Orange, for me, is a colour of transformation and warmth: the glow of sunrise and sunset, the comfort of firelight, the robes of those who dedicate their lives to contemplation and care. It mirrors the Brave Crab journey – a reminder that even in times of great change and challenge, there can still be light and warmth.
